Learning Disabilities: There is a Cure by Addie Cusimano

This book offers parents, educators and physicians answers to questions long sought after. The author, an educational therapist with more than thirty-five years of experience, discusses her findings in regard to the skills that are lacking in our educational curriculum, skills that all children need to have developed in order to learn with ease. Her preface is that learning disabled children can and should be cured at an elementary level, and that the best reading approach is one that would incorporate many more facets of learning than are presently taught. Her book is easy to read and an eye-opener. It has the answers for which Charter School designers are searching! Excellent as a supplementary or special education summer text.

A Mind at a Time by Mel Levine, MD

Dr. Mel Levine, a pediatrician, presents an excellent explanation of individual learning patterns, the way we learn. In particular, his chapters pertaining to the importance of developing long-term memory, short-term  memory, and language development, including what parents and educators can do to help students develop these skills, are outstanding.

12 Effective Ways to Help Your ADD/ADHD Child
by Laura J. Stevens, M. S.

This book is an excellent resource for finding drug-free alternatives that can be used to help children with attention deficit disorders or hyperactivity. Ms. Stevens discusses ways in which diet, allergens(food and environmental), vitamins and minerals, and perceptual weaknesses can be a possible cause or contributing factor to a child's inability to attend. The author presents statistics on studies that have been done in these areas, and gives suggestions as to what parents can do to help children overcome or lessen ADD/ADHD.  Every parent with a child with ADD/ ADHD should read this book.

It should be noted, however, that there are some overlooked areas in Ms. Steven's book that also need attention. They are visual acuity and memory and auditory acuity and memory. For this reason, it is recommended that Ms. Steven's book be read in combination with the book, Learning Disabilities: There is a Cure listed above in order to consider the entire scoop of factors that interfere or contribute to ADD/ADHD in children and adults.
